The Marine Mammal Center & Marin Headlands (Cellphone Photos)

On the 26th April 2026, my parents and I took a trip to the Marin Headlands in Golden Gate National Recreation Area in Marin County, CA. We also visited The Marine Mammal Center (2000 Bunker Rd, Sausalito, CA 94965). It was a fun trip, however very tiring. I took photos with my cellphone. I hope you enjoy viewing my photos!

Message from the Photographer: Unfortunately my physical health continues to fail due to Long COVID, and my mental health has been very very bad these past few months. Unfortunately I've been going out (no matter how exhausted I am) and prioritizing mental health at the moment, even though these trips are detrimental to my physical health.

First stop of the trip was The Marine Mammal Center (2000 Bunker Rd, Sausalito, CA 94965). There were not many patients at the hospital on this trip.

Up next, I went for a short slow hike near Fort Cronkhite and Rodeo Beach at Marin Headlands in Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Unfortunately, I did not get very far due to my Long COVID fatigue and energy issues.

Nike Missile Site SF-88L & Sausalito, CA (Cellphone Photos)

On the 7th December 2024, my parents and I took a trip to Nike Missile Site SF-88L at Marin Headlands in Golden Gate National Recreation Area in Marin County CA, and Sausalito, CA. It was very smoggy in the SF Bay Area, so there weren't many photo opportunities. I took photos on my phone and on my Olympus mirrorless camera, and the photos are split into 3 posts. These are the photos I took with my cellphone. The photos were shot at Nike Missile Site SF-88L and Sausalito, CA. The smog was really heavy so there really wasn't any opportunity for scenery photos. 

We begin our trip with Nike Missile Site SF-88L at Marin Headlands in Golden Gate National Recreation Area in Marin County CA.

The Nike Missile Site SF-88L is open on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 12 PM to 3 PM and on the first Saturday of every month, volunteers give tours of the site. Most of the volunteers giving the tours are veterans who have served at this site in the past. This is the first time I've been inside of the site due to the limited time that it is open for.

Before I get into the funny story, if you don't know, on the 5th December 2024, there was a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that shook northern California and the effects of it were felt all the way down to the SF Bay Area. A few minutes after the shaking, everyone's phones went off with a tsunami evacuation warning, which was later cancelled due to the earthquake not being the type that generates tsunamis. One of the volunteers/veterans told a funny story from last Thursday during the earthquake and tsunami warning. Apparently they had a group of visiting cadets from a landlocked area of the US and the cadets have never seen the ocean before. They received quite a jolt at the site as it is on the fault line. At first there were some panic amongst the cadets as they never experienced anything like it. A few minutes later everyone's phones went off with the tsunami warning. The veterans told them "We have to evacuate now", but the cadets had other plans. The cadets insisted on hiking up a nearby hill to see the tsunami coming in. The veterans had no choice but to let them do that. These cadets have never seen the ocean, and apparently thought the fog and smog were the waves. They posted photos and videos to the internet saying they got to witness a tsunami and an earthquake. Some higher up military officials apparently saw it and started calling the NPS and the volunteers being like "Are you crazy? Why didn't you all evacuate? You let them watch the tsunami?" The volunteers had to explain the cadets didn't listen to them and that the tsunami never came.

We spent the last half our trip walking around Sausalito, CA. There really weren't any photo opportunities here due to how heavy the smog was. The only San Francisco you can see from Sausalito was just a very faint outline of the skyscrapers.

San Francisco, CA In Smoke (Part 3)

If you have followed up with the news lately, you would know that several massive fires burned up in the San Francisco North Bay a while back. The smoke from the fires practically blanketed the San Francisco Bay Area in smoke. On October 12th, I went to San Francisco, CA to photograph the smoke. That was one of the smokiest days. The smoke created some strange lighting which I documented through my camera. The photos will be split into 3 parts. San Francisco, CA will take up 2 parts, and Treasure Island (sunset photos) will take up the last part. The photos shot in San Francisco, CA might look like they were shot during sunset, but they were not. The reason they look like that is because the smoke filters the light from the sun similar to how the atmosphere filters the light from the sun during sunset.

This is part 3. The photos are all from Treasure Island, CA. Most of the photos are of San Francisco, with one photo of the Bay Bridge. The photos are all long exposures and were shot during sunset and dusk. I will label the place names from left to right.

I know these photos are a little bit late. I get seasonal allergies around this time of year, and the smoke drifting in the air made my coughing a lot worse than normal. Not to mention, the mega rain storms earlier this year meant more plants. Now that the plants are drying out and the leaves are falling, there are much more allergens in the air. It has made me very sick, so I haven't been able to work on these photos that fast.

Before I get started on the long exposures I shot at dusk and night, I would like to tell you about a photography tool I used to help me shoot all of these long exposures you see in the following of this blog post. It is called the Polaroid Selfie Disc. While the name suggests it is a device only helps you shoot selfies, the devices does a lot more than that! The device is pretty much a quarter sized dongle that you hang from your DSLR that will allow your phone to act as a Bluetooth wireless remote trigger for your DSLR. After clipping the device to your DSLR and hooking it up to your phone, you can wirelessly trigger your camera shutter from your phone (which is an obvious feature you'd expect), but the app on the phone will also help you do bulb and time lapse shots! You can definitely just use a regular intervalometer or a wireless shutter release, but it adds extra bulk to your carry. This small dongle is about the size of a quarter and hooks up directly to your phone (which you would be carrying either way). I definitely recommend you check out the Polaroid Selfie Disc if you take a lot of photos or are a professional photographer. It is a must have for your photo bag!

On my way back down to the parking lot near Torpedo Wharf, I did one last night photography shot of the Golden Gate Bridge from Presidio. It looks a bit grainy because I was tired and cold and didn't want to wait too long for the exposure, so I used ISO 1600 for this shot.
