Foster City Independence Day 2013 (Long Exposures and Sunset Part 2)

Independence Day, or Fourth of July, is a federal holiday where Americans celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence in July 4th, 1776 which declared the US independence from Great Britain. Many Americans (and non-Americans) celebrate by shooting off and watching fireworks, having barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, political speeches, and many other activities. I spent the 2013 4th of July in Leo J. Ryan Park at Foster City, CA. I took photos of the fireworks, the event, and some scenery. I will be splitting the photos of this event into several blog posts. If you would like to see 2012 (last year) fireworks show in Foster City, you can check it out here.

Full Resolution Photos and Prints: If you want to see full resolution photos or buy prints of any of the photos you see, they are up on my portfolio for viewing. If you are interested, please select one of the links below.

Since the sun was down, I was able to do long exposure without an ND filter. Here is a long exposure of the sunset and Central Lake.

Another few photos of sunset over Foster City, CA. The lake is Central Lake.

Today I have long exposure and sunset shots from the event. These photos will be split into 2 parts. The rest of the photos will come next time.

After walking around with my Joby Gorillapod Focus, I decided to take out my real giant tripod setup and my ND filter for some long exposures of people walking by. The lake is Central Lake.

Another few long exposures. The lake is Central Lake.

Long exposure at the live performance at the amphitheatre. The lake in the background is Central Lake.

Today I have the rest of the photos of the event at Leo Ryan Park. Sunset and long exposure photos coming up next time.

People walking around and waiting around for fireworks. A kid dipping their feet into Central Lake, splashing the water.

Instead of carrying my giant tripod setup with me through the crowded event, I decided to put my new Joby Gorillapod Focus to use. I bent the tripod into a make-shift shoulder rig used in video to stabilize my shots. People were pointing and shouting that my set up looked really cool, or gave the look this guy did. XD While it isn't the smallest set up, it does do a pretty good job and I managed to pull a 1/60th exposure on a non-stabilized lens with no motion blur at all. I had to show you guys this image because the guys expression is priceless. LOOL

Another photo at around the same spot. At the event, many stands were set up selling food.

Another photo of people at the event.

More photos of people at the event.

Remember how people were setting up the stage for a live performance in the post I showed you guys yesterday? The performance started and I took a few shots of the performers performing at the amphitheatre.

A few more shots of a different performer at the amphitheatre.

Today I have photos of the fireworks show. The rest of the photos I took at the event will come up later in this chain of posts. All photos today was shot at ISO 100 at 16mm with my Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II Lens. In order to take these photos, I set the camera on Bulb mode, and used a 3rd party intervalometer.

Message from the Photographer: Because a lot of people would want to see the fireworks photos, I will be taking a break from my San Francisco Pier 39 photos. I will continue those after I exhaust my photos from the Foster City Independence Day celebration.
