El Portal Road & Southside Drive (Part 1) - Yosemite National Park, CA

During March of 2018, I spent 3 days in Yosemite National Park in California taking photos. This was my first ever trip to Yosemite National Park during winter. It was amazing! I don't think I have ever experienced that much snow out in the forest. I visited the valley, went snowshoeing on Glacier Point Road, went snowshoeing on Tioga Road, and shot many photos at Tunnel View. My photos will be split into 14 parts. I hope you enjoy viewing these photos! If you ever get a chance to visit Yosemite National Park during the winter, I highly recommend it. It is a very different experience than a spring or summer trip. My cellphone photos from the trip can be viewed here.

Cascade Falls - Yosemite National Park (Part 6)

Yosemite National Park is a national park located in California that stretches eastern portions of Tuolumne, Mariposa and Madera counties in the central eastern portion of California and covers around 761,268 acres or 3,080.74 km² of land. Yosemite National Park is best known for its waterfalls, deep valleys, grand meadows, giant sequoias, giant wilderness area, and much more. I, personally, love Yosemite National Park. I think it is very beautiful and is a great place for photographs. I also happen to live in the SF Bay Area which isn't very far from it! I try to make at least 1 trip almost every year to the park. I visited the park several month ago and I am here to show you some of the photos I took in the park as well as some photos I took on the way into the park from the SF Bay Area. These photos will be divided over several blog posts. I hope you enjoy the photos! Also, I have route information recorded using a Canon GP-E2 GPS Receiver. If you are planning a similar trip to Yosemite National Park and would like to see the route I took, feel free to email me at the email address I provided on my "About the Photographer" page for a copy. I can provide you the route information in Google Earth KMZ, Canon NMEA, and GPX formats. Now let's introduce you to the photos for today. The photos for today was from the 2nd day of my trip. The photos will include photos of my drive to Cascade Falls, Cascade Falls itself, and photos of my drive to Bridalveil Fall.

Continuing from last time, driving toward Cascade Falls. A photo of the Merced River next to El Portal Road.

Cascade Falls itself. If you want to visit this waterfall, there is a turnout parking lot on El Portal Road. The GPS coordinates is above. The parking lot is fairly visible on Google Maps, so yous shouldn't miss it.

Another photo of Cascade Falls. Sadly when I was there, I didn't know how big the whole waterfall was. After seeing some photos online, if you climb up a bit further, you can see the entire waterfall including the section which is blocked by the mountain from the perspective I was at.

A vertical shot of Cascade Falls.

Travel Tip: Cascade Falls is only 1 of the hidden waterfalls in the area. Sadly I didn't not know about the other ones on my trip, until I came back to research what this waterfall is on Google. If you want back on El Portal Road, there are several other hidden waterfalls (no parking lot) that requires a bit more hiking than this one. I found a pretty good website that talks about a few of these here. Please don't forget to come back after you are done viewing. :P

More photos at the base of Cascade Falls.

After Cascade Falls, I started driving toward Bridalveil Fall stopping along the route (on El Portal Road) for shots of the Merced River.

Between El Portal Road and Southside Drive, there is a section of an unnamed road. I shot this photo on the bridge crossing the Merced River.

Another photo on the bridge facing the other direction. In the distance is probably Cathedral Rocks.

Photo of a giant Red Fir (Abies magnifica) right across the bridge.

These are all the photos for today. I hope you have enjoyed them. Next time I have photos of Bridalveil Fall and also show you why you need a good filter for your lens. Bitter Dogbane (Apocynum androsaemifolium)

I saw these flower trees right past the bridge. I thought they looked pretty so I stopped for a few photos.

A noticed a few bees collecting nectar so I attempted to do a few more photos with them on there.

Here is another shot of the bees collecting nectar.

If you been to Yosemite from the west entrance, you probably know SR-140 runs along the Merced River. Here is another photo of the Merced River.

Approaching the ticket entrance of Yosemite National Park, there were a lot of cars. Sure was a slow day that day.

Finally inside Yosemite National Park. Pulled over to the side of El Portal Road (SR-140 turns  into this right past the ticket entrance). The photo is of the Merced River.
